Are your VHS tapes in a safe place

VHS as a medium is dead.

The only thing that keeps it alive is the original Star Wars movies, but lots of people out there still have VHS tapes with old family movies or events on.

But i have to ask you this question are your VHS tapes in a safe space ?

But more importantly magnetic tape degrades over time, And if its being stored in the wrong place then the quality is going to be even more affected. So what can you do ?

well grab your self a plastic tub and seal it up, or how about transferring it over to DVD

Well now we can offer that service to you If you are interested get in contact and save those memory's before its to late.

Animation just a story telling medium that's not just for kids

I am a big believer in animation my one drawback for not going in to the industry was my lack of artistic ability, When my cats looked like deformed otters i  knew then animation was not my calling.

How ever I still love animation but i am depressed that it get's looked down upon as a inferior way to tell story's for adults but hopefully today I may be able to change your mind, by recommending some series that may change your mind on animation.

1. Death Note

What would you do if you had a note book that could kill someone just by writing there name in it ?

Well this what that's story's about It's a super natural thriller mystery with contest twists and turns, I recommend this to anyone, and i am being deliberately vague so as not to give anything away. Its 25 episode's will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

2. DC ShowCase Jonah Hex

A couple of years ago the absolutely travesty of a film Jonah Hex was released. Completely ignoring the source material, It was bad. Really bad but DC have also been very quietly making excellent animated movies as well as shorts, and in this short 5 min film they show how good a Jonah Hex film could have been.

3. Archer
At the moment Archer is the best thing on TV, The idea that James Bond is a complete screw up has been done many times before, but i have never seen it done this well, you will fall on the floor with laughter. The altogether brilliant comedic writing that goes in to this show is amazing and you will find yourself quoting the show that you might find your self in the danger zone.

Hopefully you will go and check out some I've recommended. Let me know what you think and i may put some more recommendation up later on

How Netflix killed Blockbuster

I feel old

It's going to be odd telling youngsters one day about how we did things before the internet, and the story of blockbuster is one we will all be telling. Not only is it a story of fast moving technology but a cautionary tale of what happens when you ignore it.

  • In 1997 Reed Hastings walks into a Blockbuster and gets slapped with a $40 late fee for being six weeks late on returning Apollo 13.
  • In 1998 he starts Netflix.
  • In 2000 Netflix proposed a sale to Blockbuster and was “nearly laughed out of the office.” That same year, Blockbuster had made 16% of its revenue, $800 million dollars, from late fees. If you’re making $800 million a year off late fees, would you invest in a company that let’s you keep movies for as long as you want for free?
  • In 2004 Blockbuster is at its peak. It has over 6 Billion in revenue, 9,000 stores and 60,000 employees. They decide to start an online subscription service. It’s too late, but they don’t even know it.
  • In 2007 Netflix announces their one billionth DVD delivery and the fact that they are switching to VOD.
  • By 2010 Netflix is valued at over a billion dollars. They’ve gone from the largest client of the USPS first class mail service to the most trafficked site at night in the US. Meanwhile, Blockbuster files chapter 11 bankruptcy with over a billion in debt.

In twelve years Netflix killed blockbuster and only six years to knock it from its strongest point

The Legend of Digital Distribution

Well there is always a first time for everything.........

not too long ago when BBC iplayer  was booted unceremoniously in to the world every tn network stud there and said "its not going to last a year" But here we are now in 2014 and every network as a on demand player.

How ever as the saying goes you can not teach an old dog new tricks, and all the content for the on demand has always been shown on TV first then moved on to the networks internet side............ that is until Netflix came out and said where making the content that can only bee seen on the web TV's response so far nothing .
Until today when nickelodeon was about to end Avatat the legend of Korra its TV ratings less than stellar for what it was expecting to get mostly down to its time slot. But rather be thrown in to the pit of cancellation it looks like the audience online has saved it. so the final 5 episodes have been removed from the time slot to be shown online. While Korra fans may worry that this news signals an imminent cancellation, it should be noted that Nickelodeon has already ordered a fourth season.

so maybe at last the industry may finally recognize the internet is now a thing they have to deal with

Development Hell the gratest movies never made : Gelmo Del Toro's in the Mountens of madness

Sum times a movie can be green lit by a studio and the film will get made, but sum times things can go wrong.

Gelmo Del Toro's in the Mountens of madness

One of the most creative directors out there wants to do a film based on H.P Lovecraft's horror story about Cthulhu sounds like a match made in heaven. But ask your self this question did you go and see the Expendables in stead of Scott Pilgrim vs the world ?
Well if you did the you are partly to blame for Gelmo's dream project never happening, you see Universal at the time where taking risks with unknown scripts directors and new talent, they even put big money in to traditionally small films. Taking risks other company's where just not willing to take and yes in the mountains of madness was next on the list after Scott Pilgrim vs the World.
Unfortunately the expendables released before and people chose to see that in stead Scott Pilgrim it did ok at the box office but not enough to satisfy the big wigs.

So whats the plus side to the story i here you ask well gelmo has not given up on the film and is still trying to get it made and what about the other films well the expendables did well at the box office to get a sequel that did not so well. As for Scott Pilgrim the DVD sales out sold the expendables and is shown regularly over in Canada as a midnight showings and is on its way to be coming a cult classic.

so next time you go the cinema pic your film more wisely next time

What can you put in a video?

I get asked a lot by clients 'What can we put in a video?' The answer is, anything you can think of or possibly want.  That does not mean that you should clutter up your video with fancy imagery and you should put a great deal of  thought into what you are going to say and how you will be saying it.
These are some of the things you should consider:
Will your message be to new clients or potential clients?
What information is important to them?
Will it be about your services or product that you can provide for them ?
Or
Will it to be a message to people who know your business and are regular clients?
Think of it almost like a report of whats going on at your company.
May be you are launching a new product or service that might interest them.

You should aim to inform both new and current customers of what you have to offer. You can have more than one video targeting different types of clients you do business with.

Here at Bowler Hat Film Productions we can help you make the most of whatever information you want to broadcast from beginning to end and improve your interaction with you clients in the new digital age.

So you want a viral video.......

So you want a viral video but do you really know what you are asking ?

its a pet hate of mine when i see people say we can help your video go viral. So first of all lets ask the question, what is a viral video ?

Well there is no entry in the dictionary for it so we have to turn to Wikipedia to see what they have to say.

"viral video is a video that becomes popular through the process of (most often) Internet sharing, typically through video sharing websites, social media and email"

It sound simple right ? after all that's how you get your video watched, but notice the word popular comes up. How popular does it have to be ? I hear you ask. Well fortunately one of the first big YouTube comedians Kevin 'Nalts' Nalty had this to say :

"A few years ago, a video could be considered “viral” if it hit a million views.” But Nalts updated that definition. He said, “A video, I submit, is “viral” if it gets more than 5 million views in a 3-7 day period.

So as you can see it takes a lot of views before your video is considered to have gone viral but the best piece of advice I can give you is that viral videos are not made they happen.
